The Chucks Are Here

On Saturday my chickens arrived.  Having spent several months looking at various chicken coops and reading everything I could find on keeping chickens. I finally ordered a coop from http://www.happychicks.co.uk/
Sarah at Happy Chicks was very helpful and gave great advice.  I ordered a town house and run.

As I am new to chicken keeping I ordered the starter pack which contained.
  • 1x 25kg layers pellets
  • 1x 20kg mixed poultry corn
  • 1x 10kg poultry grit
  • 1x 3kg/3l feeder/drinker set
  • 1x 25kg bale of shavings
  • 1x 1l apple cider vinegar (monthly health tonic)
  • 1x Paragon (anti red-mite/lice powder)
  • 1 x Pecka block
The choice of chickens at Happy Chicks is fantastic. I wanted hens which would lay well but also liked to be handled.  Sarah advised I choose hybrids as these would meet my requirements and would be easier to look after.  I decided to start with four chickens.
  • Two White Star
  • A Black tail
  • A Speckeldy Hen

As planned everything was delivered at 8 o’clock Saturday morning and the hens were soon in their new home.  They all seem happy and content in their new surroundings. They are rapidly becoming part of the family with everyone checking on them regularly.

I wanted to give them more room  during the day when they have to stay enclosed and so I have added an extra run.  They be allowed to roam the garden more but not until they are more used to us and hence, hopefully, easier to catch.

 As for the big questions.

When will I have an egg?

Actually they only kept me waiting 48 hours!  Way to go girls.  It was the size of a walnut but I suppose they have to ease themselves into it.

AboutIan

We moved into this house in 2013. At that time the garden was a blank canvas, This blog is a scrapbook of my gardening journey. Something I can look back on and remember the highs and lows, something that perhaps other people will enjoy reading and hopefully commenting on along the way.
